Am I Required To File A Tax Return?

Before you put yourself through tax preparation agony, see if you are required to file a tax return. For most taxpayers the requirement to prepare and file a tax return is based on their gross income. Gross income means all income you received that is not exempt, including income earned outside the United States.
Pay close attention to these filing requirements because we now know that: "If you do not file a return:you may be charged penalties and be subject to criminal prosecution." -- 2004 IRS Instructions to Form 1040
Use charts A, B, or C to see if you must file a tax return. Even if you are not required to file a return, you should file one to get a refund of federal income tax withheld or if you are eligible for the earned income credit or the health coverage tax credit.
