When Is the Best Time to Start a Tax Preparation Business?

I started my business in late summer, early fall and I think that is just about perfect. One thing to consider is when the yellow pages will be published in your community. You want to be in the Yellow Pages in time for your first tax season.
Finding an office and getting it furnished and buying office equipment like a copier, fax and phone system are major decisions that you want to approach with eagerness rather than urgency. Buying next years tax return software program in the fall may entitle you to a free copy of the current year's program that you can learn to use while you are not under ant time pressures. Getting business cards and stationary are other office opening necessities that can take a week or longer.

I would suggest opening your tax preparation business in the fall before your first tax season. Another reason for this is advertising. I believe most people choose their tax preparer in December or January. At least that seems to be the time when we read and hear about tax planning for the upcoming tax season. So, if your office is established you can begin advertising before undecided clients have already chosen their tax preparer.
