Will You Rent an Office or Work out of Your Home?

In my opinion, if you want to project a professional image and charge professional fees then by all means rent an office. After you have been established for a few years you can move into your home if you need to cut overhead.
Most tax preparers have their own offices so you will definitely be falling behind the competition working from home. Remember this if you work at home: Your mind and body are never away from work. I find that I need the physical separation that an office provides. I've also found that I prefer a commute of about 15 to 20 minutes so I can transition from home to office and from office to home.

You'll have to budget the rent into your business plan and it may take you some time to break even paying rent. This is another reason to prepare business tax returns. There may be an opportunity to get the landlord as a client which would help you out.
