How Will You Advertise Your Tax Preparation Business?

This is a very difficult question to answer because most new clients come from referrals from current clients. I have tried print advertising with very poor results. It's been my experience that clients want to hear from someone else who uses your services before they are willing to switch.
You will get some calls from the Yellow Pages but my suggestion would be to keep from going overboard with this type of advertising. When advertising in the Yellow Pages be sure to put a listing under "T" for tax preparation. I have had the best results in getting new clients from having a nicely landscaped sign on a major highway.

You should try different types of advertising to see what works best for your business. Take a look at what your competition is doing, but don't be a copycat. Be prepared to spend at least 3% of your expected annual revenues on advertising in your first year.

When I started my tax preparation business, CPA firms used firm brochures to introduce themselves to new clients who came to their offices. Today, I use my website for the same purpose. It may not get you any new business but it's good for giving directions and it is very useful for prospective clients who may need a little nudge before becoming your client.

I always try and stay away from saying I am the greatest tax guru on the planet. I like to let my education and experience do the talking. Above all, I try to be professional and respectful of the tax preparation profession in any type of advertising that I do.
