NASBA Proposes Changes to CPA Educational Requirements

Educational Requirements for CPA License

To obtain the required skills and knowledge needed to be successful CPA, the AICPA has determined that the traditional four-year undergraduate degree was inadequate.
The AICPA has begun requiring today's students to complete 150 semester hours of education to become a CPA. Because of significant increases in official accounting and auditing pronouncements and the proliferation of new tax laws, the knowledge base that a professional practice in accounting requires has substantially increased. Business methods have become increasingly complex. The proliferation of regulations from federal, state, and local governments requires well-educated individuals to ensure compliance.

Also, improvements in technology have had a major effect on information systems design, internal control procedures, and auditing methods.

Many state Boards of Accounting (more than 40) now require or will require 150 semester hours of education for obtaining the CPA certification. Many Colleges and universities have structured their curriculum for CPAs with a good balance of accounting, business, and general education courses.
